LOVE vs LS

90.7 LOVE RADIO &Brgy. LS FM

LOVE Radio

I don’t listen to radio often, but I know about the Tambalang Balasubas at Balahura program of Love radio. It stars two DJs, Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper. This tandem is famous. They are two witty DJs who have the infectious laughs and witty comments. They answer listeners text and Facebook messages. Sometimes, I think, the topics are also given. They just have to elaborate and expand it more. Though it is a social matter or most of the time like in any radio station, Love matters, they make it funnier. I think, to compare the morning program, people would go for Love radio than LS FM, I found LS FM boring at some parts.

Love Radio or its unpopular…’Kailangan pa ba i-memorize yan? Bisyo na ‘to!’ slogan is tell more than I can say. In the past, upon hearing sometime, they don’t have the repeating ‘Love Radio, Yes FM’ child-voiced or if it’s really a child telling that they are the number one radio station, if not ‘Love’ its ‘Yes’. Appealing to the public like a child, playful, high-pitched voiced or is it really a child?

At 1pm-3pm program on love radio, the segment is Dear Heart and their dj is named Diwata. In this segment, one can send in letters to share to listeners, most of the time it is love story whether romantic ending or a tragic one. DJ Diwata will read the letter and plays songs in a chapter of a story. The songs are obviously jiving according to the mood of the story. The DJ comments on the story if she feels the same or not. She also takes comments of the listeners.

In love radio’s, 11am-1pm programming, the DJ is Khristine Dera. The segment is called Showdown, porbaly, everytime she have a chance to say her a.k.a and “motto”, she would always tell you, that she is “Tinderang engkantada na nagmula sa langit, bumagsak sa lupa, ayun plakda”. In the steamy or should I say hot afternoon, hearing her powerful voice is enticing. Enticing in a way that you would want to sleep and at the same time listen. She plays different kinds of music. She also take calls, texts, and other request from different medium their listeners would use.

Her segment is not boring, she is good in taking calls and throwing jokes to each listeners. She is good in making side comments although others are somewhat ‘gasgas’. I’m not sure if other radio station uses two callers and a DJ to converse. Each caller has his or her own opinions about a given topic. DJ Kristine Dera gives the topic, most of the time I think. Whenever there is a funny note, she also have a cool laugh, like all DJs do. There will be a time that in expressing opinions, the callers don’t jive, so there will be a little bit of debate and in the end, the learning is for the DJ and audience to take. I observed some logs in the air, that makes it u n desirable to hear. But in the end, the DJ jokes again then it will make you laugh, if you’re ‘mababaw’, of course, just like me.

LS FM

I just listened to this recently on a bus, they are tuned in to this station. If its early in the morning and you what peace of mind, don’t go for LS, they will make you laugh and ‘inis’ and ‘bored’ at the same time. I think the program name is Potpot and Friends but there are two radio Djs only in the show. This is for the sake of critical thinking, they call people who ‘don’t’ listen to them. On a serious note, mapapahiya sila kung naka-tuned in ang tatawagan nila sa ibang stations. But this is a good PR for them since they are just newly established radio station, they need exposure.

In Bgy. LS FM’s 11am to 1pm programming, the segment is called Kwentong Brangay and, on the counter part of Showdown of DJ Kristine Dera. The radio is on tis peak of coping up with the technology and advertising history, probably, that’s the biggest part of it, why radios merge and create new programs or sometimes it recreates the radio station as a whole. In this segment, there are three (3) radio DJs namely, Papa Baldo, Mama Belle and Papa Tolits. As I said earlier, ‘recreating’, the set up for this segment is conversation type also. The DJs and callers can freely converse about anything under the sun. But there are other interventions, like other matters that are not really jiving or anything comes out from the three ingenuous mind of its DJs. They said, two heads are better than one, and then three is more.  If the topic the caller is not that interesting, they would act or sound is more like it, they would sound like sleeping.

Part of reinventing of radio stations are the different ways to communicate with the DJs, nowadays, there are Facebook pages, Twitter, websites, texting or the typical telephone.

ALL GLOSS, TRAVEL and GLAMOUR

Magazines were once a truly national medium, the television of their time. They are the medium that first made specialization a virtue, and they prosper today by speaking to even narrowly defined groups of readers.-Baran, 2006

Magazines. The range of magazines consists mainly of periodicals, including trade magazines, journals and illustrated magazines. Trade magazines cover limited field, thus attracting a limited specialist readership. Unlike books, production costs for magazines are not paid for exclusively by the final consumer. Often more than half of the costs are financed by advertising. Magazines are usually published by publishing houses just like books. Unlike books, magazines usually have shoter lifespan. This is due to the content and it is a major characteristic of the periodical. Since magazines have a limited length of use and differ from books greatly in terms of content, their external form also differs from that of books.

Magazine production differs considerably from book production. Magazines are generally multi-colored booklets with flexible cover. They often have high circulation and are bound using simple binding processes. Depending on the circulation, magazines are printed with sheet-fed or web offset presses, but rotogravure presses are also for magazines with a very high circulation. –(Handbook of Print Media: technologies and production methods, Helmut Kipphan-springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Germany.2001)

asianTraveler is an independent travel and leisure magazine published by Pilsigns, Inc. under Lexmedia Corporation. asianTraveler is available in the flight libraries and lounges of the following airlines:

asianTraveller magazine is  headed by a certified travel lover publisher, Gabriel Dela Cruz. As I scan the pages, I observed their writers and photographers are actually travelling. As they experience a certain place, they certainly share it to others in this form of communication. It made me excited to read its contents. The asianTraveller magazine is committed in bringing adventures, experiences, thrills and fun to its readers.

The January-February issue of asianTraveller magazineis the magazine I reviewed. I borrowed it from AFI office while everyone in the office have meeting, I skim, scan, read, and review this one.

The magazine has different parts. I will try to enumerate and discuss each according to the reference I have.  As I have looked into the pages, there are advertisements, promoting products and most of the time places. Because this type of magazine is specialized for travelling. Some of the examples are,

(will upload here)

in all, I think 60-70% of the magazine is composed of advertisements.  There are travelling agencies, tours, accommodations and hotels and other travelling related advertisements. Of all the ads inside, Waterfront Hotel ad is the most glamorous in terms of page design and color, it is the type of ad where it’ll you want to experience it also.

One thing is also evident, there are many All caps, or in case you don’t know word written in all capital letters, to put emphasize and so that the readers would read it easily, in short “catchy”. Here’s an example:

(pictures here)

There are also Byline or the name and identification of a story’s author. The magazines have different contributors just like this one. Some articles are not written by in house author but from writers who travels also. Some just send their articles to the publishers.  The Captions, on the other hand are the heading placed above a photograph; sometimes used to refer to the descriptive copy below a photo. The magazines are known for their glossy pages, colourful pictures and eye-catching descriptions, more on creative. As I browse some page, there are many photographs that you can’t really miss to look at.

Of course, the story or copy or article, whatever you call it Is the most important part for me. Although by looking in the pictures you’ll be satisfied, the story behind it is essential. I really enjoyed reading the articles in this magazine. The words that the writers used were also good.

Most of the articles are editorialized in a way, because the writers here expresses what their opinions and the story were written in their own ways, based on their experiences. The articles are not also news that’s why the deliveration of the story is feature-type. Hey! Who wants to travels of the reviews in the places they wanna go to is not enthusiastic enough?

What’s the Menu? In newspaper terminology, a front-page box or boxes announcing a paper’s inside contents, sometimes called teaser, in the asianTraveller, the feature the stories are about the “Passion Capitals”. These passion capitals includes Puerto Princesa, Hawaii, Amsterdam, Spain, India, Seoul, and Langkawi. Before reading the articles, I thought ‘oh I knew it, the underground river, the Hawaii beach but I was wrong’. Since the aim of the magazine is to unravel more wonders of nature, this time, the places were different!

Good thing about about a traveller and a writer is that you experience the best of both worlds, you physically, personally experience and in turn sharing them. Featured in Puerto Princesa are the beaches remained to be discovered. There is an article pertaining to El Nido Palawan also. For Hawaii, I remember the writer asked ‘why Hawaii is the place for love?’ then they said ‘Hawaii have all to ingredients for an ideal romantic getaway’.

For Amsterdam, they have “Anne Frank Huis” or Anne Frank’s house, where they had to live for two years at the underground during holocaust, now it is open for tourist. Another quiet interesting in Amsterdam are its coffee shops, when its color brown, here you can order coffee with not just latte but beer and other drinks even in the morning, yeah, whatever you like.

One thing the I found in the magazines is that the writers, most of the time is not the picture, not even once, just their names, but it is good that this particular magazine have pages featuring the writers also.

What Spain could offer for visitors? Well, there’s good places you can go, and best foods you can have.  For all those you wants to travel there are other places you can also check-out like the streets of Seoul, where they offer bunch of foods you might really want to try, also if you like all thing spicy.

Included in the mag is the Winner of Cathy Airlines’ Around the word in 80 days, from a book written to a true adventure taken. Its winner had slept in the Great Wall of China, Scubadive and joined Lechong BAlayan Festival in the Philippines, eat street foods in Taiwan, Witness Ramadan in Bangladesh, went to Ankhor Wat, had a Yantra tattoo in Thailand and alas! Had climbed the Fuji mountain in Japan. IT was not just a backpack full adventure, indeed.

The asiantraveller also feature the Ayala Museum. For the Profile, or its personality piece, Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo was interviewed about her career in the Philippines and in Singapore where had to be a theatre actress and a teleserye actress the same time. She shared that she never thought that even after having a family, she would experience things that she have now. She is quiet adventurous and spontaneous that’s why she survived the industry.

For the Style, rules regarding punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation, etc. I didn’t have any problem, they provided readers the best way they could share in their words. Another interesting part is a writter’s escapade in Seoul, Korea which I really like to go to sometime, she the writer learned different words, so for me that’s interesting enough for somebody who wanted to experience different cultures also.

For my summary, every articles written contains the essential 5 W’s and H of a story. IT not just sharing the fun but also a ginx what to enjoy when you travel. Though you might want to travel abroad, other who wanted to discover more of the Philippines are all welcome. Advantage of having a travel magazine is it serves as a personal tour guide.

To asianTraveller mag, great job! Happy 10th anniversary.

Tumblroid: Tumbling with Tumblr and Tabloid

Its  all about Infotainment…

Its more fun to read Tabloids!

Book Critique: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: the Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief

If you like Greek mythology, God’s and Goddesses of Mt. Olympus, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: the Lightning Thief is the starter book for you and the title suggests it all to you, yes! They still appear in 21st century but only in books. However, the title is longer than other novels (e.g. Harry Potter, Fallen, Vampire Diaries etc.) but I think this is more appropriate than making it shorter. There are stories within the story of Greek mythology so let us just settle with that title, when you try to analyse and read the book, it is really a good, informative title cohesive with its content.

It is the first of the five-book series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians written by Rick Riordan released on June 28, 2005.

I like the story but it would really be cool if you research before reading this book. In a way, it will be a big help understanding the characters of the story. It takes you down to your Greek mythology class for a while. I would be telling my book critic later on, the style, tone, mood, and other aspects will be tackled on the later part of this paper.

First, this is my summary of the story based on what I remembered:

The story is about a demigod (half man, half God), a 12-year-old ADHD and Dyslexia kid named Percy who lives in our time, of course he doesn’t know it (as usual). The story started on a museum trip, with Grover, by far his best friend. His other teacher called his attention and told him to go with him and so they left the bunch of students. The teacher confronted him but it attacks him then after, he would not believe what he saw, the teacher was a monster, fury, exactly. Then before he is torn into pieces, Grover and Mr. D. his true teacher saved him. After the incident, he knew he is a demigod; he is the son of Poseidon, the sea god, and bad forces everywhere looks for him.  He is allegedly the thief of Zeus’ lightning, as what the title suggest. And his journey to Camp Half Blood (permanent camp for half-bloods) started, he also knew that Grover is a satyr, half man, half goat (in appearance) also protects him. His mother also leaves with a stinky man, Gabe, which in return protected him from other elements.

In this part of the story, he met his second monster encounter, a Minotaur. It was the rough part when he had to enter the camp but his mother cannot, Yes! Because she’s human, full human. 12 cabins corresponds the twelve Olympians. For his first night, Percy stays in the Hermes cabin, where demigods who aren’t claimed by their God-parent stays. Poseidon, the sea god, claims Percy as his son during a game of capture-the-flag, this is like a welcome game for him, he saw how powerful he is when the water healed him while battling with Annabeth. Then, he stays in Poseidon’s place, alone.  Percy, being a child of one of the “Big Three”, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon received different reactions from other campers. He also became close to Annabeth, Athena’s daughter.  Percy is accused of stealing Zeus’ lightning bolt. But he will not prolong his agony, he know that he did not steal it so, he, Annabeth, and Grover are given 10 days to return Zeus’ bolt to Mount Olympus , to stop the provoking war between the gods and save his mother, where Percy discovers she has been held hostage in the Underworld.  They encountered monsters like Medusa. When they defeated Medusa, they cut off her head and used it for defense to other monsters because everyone who looks at Medusa’s eyes becomes as hard as rock.

It is then revealed that Luke, a son of Hermes and Ares, god of war, stole the bolt for Kronos, the villain God who is attempting to rise from Tartarus after Zeus decided to do. The master bolt – the weapon upon which all other lightning bolts are modeled – has been stolen, and Zeus has accused Poseidon of instigating the theft. The Lord of the Sky believes that Poseidon used Percy, a human hero, to steal the bolt in a plot to overthrow Zeus. He and Luke had an encounter before he could surrender the bolt to Mt. Olympus, in which in the present time in Empire State Building. At the end of the book, they safely return to camp and Percy makes a decision to stay home during the year, and only go to camp during the summer although he knew it would be an open world, where bunches of monsters are expected to come.

Every author has his or her own style – that is, each author uses literary devices, tone, and mood in a particular way that makes his or her writing recognizable. When you read several books by the same author, you become accustomed to the author’s style of writing and sometimes you look for authors with a similar style.

The author uses words, phrases, and sentences in his book very well. The dialogues and scenes (though this is a book) were really well written in the present time’s tone. The characters were described in like jigsaw puzzle, it is like giving more information as you go along the way, with this it makes a little suspense. While I was reading the book, every chapter gives me excitement, in a way that I already imagine things I want to expect in the next chapters.  For the vocabulary, I read very little unfamiliar words, for me, it made the book more interesting, why would the author write a full book of unfamiliar words than to make it more understandable and suitable for every reader. For the sentences and other components, all the parts were cohesively in a friendly approach, though excitement and expectation arises most of the time, those were met, naman!.

The genre of the book is Fantasy, Fiction, Thriller and Mystery. For the level of complexity in the writing, there was no boring part. The author mostly use compound and complex sentences also which I think is suitable for a suspense type of literary work. The types of writing devices does the author use dialogue and storytelling for some scenes he tries to explain himself at the book. The use of dialogues was also observed.  What about the level of detail for the story of Percy Jackson? The writing was descriptive (in describing characters, settings, actions/events) but it does not become too detailed, too ‘wordy’ or too ‘flowery’.

The lightning thief explores Greek mythology in a modern setting, but it does so as a humorous work of fantasy, and makes no attempt to subvert or contradict Judeo-Christian teachings. Early in the book, the character Chiron draws a clear distinction between God, capital-G, the creator of the universe, and the Greek gods (lower-case g) explains the author, moreover, Greek mythology itself is thousands of years old. Anyone can write about the gods and monsters. Perhaps yone can come up with your own original spin on that material. “Like Percy, I’m pretty ADHD, and there are simply too many messages right now that distract me from my writing”, says the author during an interview, much has been said, we can say that the author have that “pinanghuhugutan ng istorya” I remember what my former high school teacher says, that the work of an author has always similarity than of that in his real life.

Rick Riordan is also the award-winning, bestselling author and creator of a new series The 39 Clues. Rick Riordan did not knew that the shared bedtime story with his oldest son was just the beginning of his journey into the world of children’s books. janAlready an award-winning author of mysteries for adults, Riordan, a former teacher, was asked by his son Haley to tell him some bedtime stories about the gods and heroes in Greek mythology. “I had taught Greek myths for many years at the middle school level, so I was glad to comply,” says Riordan. “When I ran out of myths, (Haley) was disappointed and asked me if I could make up something new with the same characters.” At the time, Haley had just been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. Greek mythology was one of the only subjects that interested the then second-grader in school. Motivated by Haley’s request, Riordan quickly came up with the character of Percy Jackson and told Haley all about “(Percy’s) quest to recover Zeus’s lightning bolt in modern-day America,” says Riordan. “It took about three nights to tell the whole story, and when I was done, Haley told me I should write it out as a book.”

Rick Riordan (pronounced as Ryer-dan) was an American history teacher when he wrote the Lightning Thief, so he was teaching about Andrew Jackson and Stonewall Jackson. His grandfather’s nickname was Jack. Also, Jackson was the name of his protagonist in the adult mystery series he began writing in 1997, which featured private eye Jackson “Tres” Navarre. Annabeth is a name hemade up. Rick Riordan also said during an interview that “Some names were picked as shout-outs to people I knew. Mrs. Dodds is based (loosely) on a real Mrs. Dodds who taught math at the school where I worked. Mr. Brunner was the Latin teacher there. Connor Stoll, Travis Stoll, and Charles Beckendorf are all former students of mine. I also had students named Miranda and Nico. But like I said, most names I pick because they just work well. I also have to be careful not to have too many names with the same first letter. It would get confusing, for instance, if everyone’s name started with ‘S’ — Sam, Sean, Shaw, Sally, and Susan”.

The novel provides a high-interest, humorous introduction to the Greek myths. It works well if taught in conjunction with mythology, which is a core component of most English state curriculum frameworks. The novel can also be taught at any time after the introduction of Greek mythology, to draw on students’ prior experience as per standard three of the Standards for English Language Arts of the National Council of Teachers of English. Rick Riordan also has fifteen years experience as an English/language arts teacher at the middle school level. He designed The Lightning Thief to be appropriate reading for ages nine through fourteen. The novel offers an excellent chance for students to explore the Classical heritage of Greece as it applies to modern civilization; to analyze the elements of the hero’s quest rendered in a modern-day story with a first-person narrator to whom students can easily relate; and to discuss such relevant issues as learning disabilities, the nature of family, and themes of loyalty, friendship and faith.

We consume information every day, but in turn, we also make it.  Sa pagpagamit ng mga bagong SNS or social networking sites even blogging and micro-blogging, we can say that the lifestyle of people changes as the media landscape also change, let’s imagine kung bigla na lang mawala ang mga yan (hypothetically) eh di napakaraming apektado. Of course, there are different impacts of these changes and the changes to come.

The Philippines was stroke by another calamity that changes the lives of the people in an instant. It was December of 2011 and many are preparing for Christmas and Christmas parties are everywhere. Wala namang may kagustuhan ng sakuna, hindi ba? The typhoon cost us many lives of people in the south and we can say na walang-wala sila also death toll goes up to 600 that time. It was a Twitter (Channel) post by Valerie Conception (Source), a local artist in the Philippines that cause buzz around the entertainment industry and the whole country. She

Clearly, she wanted people to know that she was at the occasion that the president attended that night, to me its quiet ironic though. Whether she intended it that way or not, diverse opinions rose from this.

The public now uses new types of technologies and media. Different ways to communicate and disseminate information was also brought by these new technologies. Thus, freedom of speech is being exercise, more often taken for granted, and many people are constantly abusing it. People now are liable in information they disseminate to the public and must be careful at all times.

Agenda-Setting Theory

“Bakit nga ba kadalasan paulit-ulit ang mga balitang napapanood sa TV o napapakinig sa radio?”  There is a theory proposed by Lippman (1922) who discussed how media influences the “pictures on our head” then, other great scholars ideally expanded it. It was the era of limited media effects.

Agenda Setting was proposed almost 40 years ago by Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw to deal with the vision popular at the time that media effects are immediate reflections of media consumption. Intellectual content was thought to transfer from media to its consumers directly proportional to the amount of media exposure.               The study of agenda-setting is the study of social change and of social stability. Agenda is a set of issues that are communicated in a hierarchy of importance at a point in time. The agenda-setting process is an ongoing competition among the proponents of a set of issues to gain the attention of media professionals, the public, and the policy elites (Dearing & Rogers, 1992). Although it was not originally conceptualized like this, it has been seen that it evolved and still evolving.

According to Maxwell McCombs,  author of The Agenda-Setting Role of the Mass Media in the Shaping of Public Opinion, the power of the news media to set a nation’s agenda, to focus public attention on a few key public issues, is an immense and well-documented influence. Not only do people acquire information about public affairs from the news media, readers and viewers learn how much importance to attach to a topic based on the emphasis placed on it in the news.
